The health experts agree- drinking diet soda is bad for you. It doesn’t help you lose weight, and research has found, it may even cause you to gain weight. If you are one of those people that drink Diet Coke to save calories, you may need to rethink your choice. In this article, I will give you five reasons why diet soda is bad for you. As we move to a New Year, it would be wise to consider giving up diet soda’s as your New Year’s Resolution.

Diet Soda Confuses Your Body

In theory, diet sodas are a great idea. They save your body from the 140 calories for each glass. It tricks your body into thinking it is drinking something sugary. The bad news is aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose are just a few of the chemicals in the soda. Over time, diet soda dull your sweet taste buds that in time will make it harder for you to taste foods that are actually good for you like fruits and vegetables. Even more bad news for artificial sweeteners is it has almost the same effect of real sugar. It spikes your insulin levels.  Insulin spikes lead to fat storage in your body.

Does Not Guarantee Weight Loss

Diet soda does not guarantee weight loss. It is a hard concept for many people to grasp. They feel if they eat anything with ‘diet’ in the name, it should mean guaranteed results. The fact is diet soda drinker have a 70% chance of having a larger midsection than non-soda drinkers. The speculation is that many diet soda drinkers believe that if they are not drinking any of their calories they can eat pizza or a Big Mac. That clearly is not true. A calorie is still a calorie.

It Has No Nutritional Value

Diet soda doesn’t have any nutritional value. In fact, studies have found it can hurt your health. It can ruin your teeth, and add to stomach acid trouble. If diet soda is bad news, what is the best non-calorie drink? Experts recommend you drink plain old water for your calorie-free beverage of choice. Diet soda has an increased risk for type II Diabetes; 36% increased risk. Just one can of diet soda a day almost double your risk for Diabetes.

Diet Soda is Linked to Migraines

Early studies of artificial sweeteners revealed that diet soda may be a big trigger for those with a migraine disorder. If a patient complains of headaches, the first question they will ask is if you drink diet sodas. It is usually the headache trigger.

Say Goodbye to your Smile

Drinking diet soda or any soda can leave your pearly whites looking like you are an aspiring actress for “Breaking Bad.” It will eat the enamel off your teeth. It will turn our teeth yellow or even brown, before destroying the whole tooth- all together. Experts compare the soda drinker mouth to that of a cocaine or meth user. The teeth look exactly the same.

Increased Rate of Depression

Soda drinkers are much more likely to become depressed. They have up to a 30% increased risk for depression for those who drank four or more cans of soda daily- compared to those who did not drink any soda at all. The study researched soda drinkers for over ten years. Their findings should be enough to motivate you to stop drinking diet soda.

Diet soda was once thought of a great beverage that could be a great tool in losing weight. Now that the research on diet soda is complete, we learned it is not good for you at all. It can cause depression, cause type II Diabetes, ruin your teeth and internal organs. If you are looking for a healthy drink, diet soda is not it. Put your health first and stop drinking diet soda today.
